What is Zirconium Coating?

Decays, traumas, and dental irregularities in teeth can cause both loss of substance over time and create an unfavorable aesthetic appearance. In cases where fillings and alternative treatments have been insufficient for many years, porcelain work supported by metal was commonly performed. However, as this method did not provide satisfactory aesthetic results, alternatives began to be sought. As a result of studies conducted in the field of dentistry, zirconium, a white-colored and hard material, started to be used.

Zirconium, a highly resistant and biocompatible material, has been widely used in dental aesthetic procedures due to its translucency. Zirconium veneer is the most compatible, natural-looking, and durable type of veneer for the gum. It can also be used for patients who have allergies to certain metal derivatives such as nickel-titanium. Zirconium, which is the most preferred type of veneer in terms of aesthetic appearance, can also be used complementarily with metal-supported porcelain. How is Zirconium Coating Made?

  3. The patient’s expectations and the condition of the mouth and surrounding dental structures are considered together to create a smile design.

  5. Once the zirconium veneer process begins, the tissues connected to the teeth to be veneered are numbed using local anesthesia.
  6. The patient’s teeth are trimmed and reduced, and measurements are taken using silicone impression materials to create plaster models.
  7. The opening and closing dimensions of the teeth are determined using dental waxes.
  8. Temporary veneers are then prepared and attached to the patient’s trimmed and reduced teeth.
  9. During the second session, the substructures of the veneers are tried on.
  10. Their fit is checked, and if necessary, “re-fitting” is performed. The color of the porcelain that will be applied on the zirconium is determined.
  11. A final fitting is done with the zirconium veneers that have been fitted with porcelain.
  12. If there are any issues with occlusion, height, or width, they are corrected.
  13. If there are any aesthetic imperfections, they are addressed.
  14. After the final fitting, the veneers are sent to the laboratory for the glazing process (polishing and shining stage).
